Jalama Beach Park / Last Minute Action

March, 2013   //   by Chase Hasch

We were at Jalama Beach Park for two days before we got any type of action.

Jalama Beach is without a doubt the best bet for wind in Southern California. Well calling Jalama “Southern California” is almost a bit of a stretch. Let’s call it South of Central California.

The Beach park has no Cell Phone Reception and therefore no 3G or Wifi. This limited our stay for 2 days since my dad needs to work remotely. A set of pay phones at the park entrance is the only connection to the outside world. A great place to bring your cell phone addicted kids (or parents) for a weekend.

On our last day there we went surfing as the waves had been getting better through out the day. The fog was just starting to clear up and I haven’t gone for a good surf sesh since I left the Dominican Republic. Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz looked great while we where theme but a Surf Contest was being held allowing no one in the water.

I spent most of my time at the Jalama camp ground riding my dad’s bike around and sliding through every corner I could find. As the sun was slowly setting on the final day and we just pulled into the RV dumping station getting ready to leave the wind started nuking out of nowhere and within minutes!

Sand was flying over the beach indicating solid 20knots of perfect sideshore wind. I rigged up my nine as fast as I could while my dad pulled all water hoses and quickly parked our truck and trailer back in our old camp spot. The wind was gusty in the begining while my dad was taking a few pictures before not being able to resist to rig up himself and join me. The inside was nice and clean to a point were I could start throwing a few unhooked tricks n addition to catching a few waves coming in.

The session lasted a good hour before the wind direction changed to offshore and it was getting pretty dark. I self landed packed up my gear and we set out for our next destination Ventura County and SoCal.
