Dash and Splash Port Aransas, TX

April, 2013   //   by Chase Hasch

We stayed on the beach of Port Aransas for two days and where rewarded with small but fun onshore wave kiting conditions.

On the first day we did get a short surf sesh in, but the wind was only enough to get the trainer kite to fly so my dad and I threw my Diablo up really high and I tried to catch it on the trainer kite lines. I must say I was surprised at how well it worked…

The seconed day was a bit more eventful we had to wait until around 5pm before the wind came up just enough for me to try to ride my 11 meter Cabrinha Chaos. I took out my surf board for the first time (not a surfboard made for kiting I used in the past – but my actual “surf” surf board with a kite. I was so much fun, the only worry is that dedicated kite surf boards are a lot stronger build as compared to my little quad surf board.

After the wind picked up a little more I got out my Cabrinha Custom and went for a fun litte freestyle sesh by the pier. Unforutnetly the wind started dropping right after that. All in all it was a fun on shore wind wind session.

No kiting allowed on Padre Island National Seashore (not to be confused with South Padre)

We also visited Padre Island where we went to a small beach campground called Bird Island Basin. We pulled up looking at a super awesome flat water spot where for some reason there were only windsurfers… We unhitched the trailer and I started getting ready to get on the water when the campground host politely informed us that there is no kiting allowed within the Padre Island National Seashore after several kite incidents. This reminds us how careful kiters need to be not to loose access to more beaches.
